LWV Nov. 14 Meeting: 82nd Texas Legislature Update.
Join us for an Update from the 82nd Texas Legislature
Speaker: Senator Tommy Williams

As you know, the 82nd Texas Legislature session was held this year. Legislation touched upon a wide range of topics -- juvenile justice, public education, campaign finance reform, election laws and voting rights, open government, redistricting, healthcare, transportation, natural resources. We look forward to this update, in part, as a way to continue the dialogue about what Texas needs now and for the future. This is another great opportunity for local community discussions and we encourage you to attend this unique chance to hear from our very own Senator Tommy Williams.

Kick off the new Year with LWV-MoCo.
Our next gathering will be a party on January 8, 2012 to kick off the new year so please save the date!
Peggy Hausman has graciously offered to host the party at her home. The League will provide entrée and mimosas. Appetizers, side dishes, dessert, etc., are potluck and you'll be contacted to see what culinary delights or refreshments you'd like to bring. There will be door prizes too, and I hear Peggy has a couple of large TV screens for you sports enthusiasts. We will also be asking for donations to help offset League costs and support future activities.

Join us for a lively discussion focused on LWVUS' "Privatization of Government Services, Assets and Functions" study. Our guest speaker, Professor Lauren Edwards, will provide her perspective and share her thoughts about key policy issues along with the pros and cons of privatization. The topic is important since it looks at parameters and issues in connection with proposals to transfer federal, state or local government services, assets and functions to the private sector. LWV - Feb. 27 - Panel: Voter Qualification Requirements.
Our February meeting features a panel discussion of the revised Texas voter qualification requirements passed as Senate Bill 14 (SB14). If approved by the DOJ, Texas voters will be required to present a government-issued photo ID in order to be qualified to vote at a polling place. The panel will present a historical perspective, discuss the League's U.S. and Texas stated positions, their experiences as election workers and the impact of the proposed photo ID requirement.
